Tapping into a wealth of business know-how

Information on a wide range of issues affecting businesses in South Lakeland is now available at the touch of a button.

A new website aimed at local firms and businesses’ considering moving into the area has been launched by the district council’s economic development department.

Many months of planning and development have gone into the website www.business-gateway.southlakeland.gov.uk which provides a single source of advice and practical information.

Economic Development Officer Audrey Taylor said that the site had been put together in response to increasing demands from businesses.

“We’re really pleased to be able to offer this new facility to businesses. Our role at the council is to provide advice and guidance to business through our partnership with local development agencies and the site is intended as a first point of contact for relevant business information and statistics.”

The district council is committed to helping local businesses to expand and encouraging others into the area. In order to do this, businesses need access to up-to-the-minute information.”

One of the most well read sections of the site is expected to be details of the myriad of grant schemes and funding opportunities for businesses.
There is also a parish-by-parish breakdown of which wards are eligible for the various sources of local, state or European funding.

“It will save a lot of ringing around the various agencies to find out that information,” Mrs Taylor told Business Gazette.

The site also features details of sites and premises available for business use, statistical facts and figures on the South Lakeland area, and information on sources of business advice and training.

The site was designed by Melkinthorpe based website designers Lakeshost.com. Explaining the choice, Mrs Taylor said: “They are a fairly new business themselves with graphic design and technical database management skills. They could test out the site from the point of view of a new business.”

She said the site was a first for SLDC – the council’s tourism department is due to go online next. There are plans to eventually create a corporate website, with links to both the economic development and tourism sites.

Mrs Taylor urged businesses to take a look at the new site. “We have tried to make it as comprehensive as we can. We are really keen for businesses to try the site out and let us know if there is anything that they want to be added or improved. We want it to be a dynamic site.”
